Rudy Giuliani Speaks at CPAC

This morning, the 34th Annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, DC heard from Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani. This event was covered live by CSPAN.

Before a packed audience, and an introduction by George Will, Rudy Giuliani said the following:

"We have to make a government that functions. One of my heroes is Ronald Reagan and he spoke here 12 times. The people in this room represent a new generation of a Reagan revolution."

"Reagan taught us optimistic leadership. He was a leader which is a combination of being a visionary and a practical person who can achieve results. He had great dreams and visions. He saw a world that could be free of Communism. He saw it as not just another alternative economic philosophy. He saw it as an evil that took from people the most important thing they have. Freedom."

"We believe in lowering taxes. I don't just believe it, I did it many times in NYC. The first time I did it, it was the hotel occupancy tax. It was a small cut and it was the only one I could get from the City Council and State Legislature because we had a big deficit and they wanted to add taxes. The day after we accomplished it, my first deputy mayor, came into my room and said "You just set a record for tax cuts". I said that can't be; it was a measly tax cut. He said it was the only tax cut done in NY."

"We took the welfare program and were able to remove 5-600,000 from the welfare rolls. We turned the welfare agencies into employment agencies. We changed the name of the NYC welfare office to the NYC Job Center."

"We don't say that as someone better than any one else. We say that in a spirit of gratitude and it's our job to share it with everyone else and move forward with the vision that Ronald Reagan had -- as a shining city on the hill. As a nation that will be a leader in the world."
