Giuliani sweeps through capitol

PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL DOESN'T GET TO MEET WITH SCHWARZENEGGER

SACRAMENTO - Rudy Giuliani did not visit Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday, even though he was mere steps from the state Capitol and held a fundraiser in the governor's Sacramento hotel home.

No matter. The former New York City mayor and Republican presidential candidate made do with a downtown lunchtime mix of high school girls, legislative aides, ladies meeting for lunch and activists on break from college.

Giuliani swept through Ambrosia Cafe on Thursday, disturbing the usual lunch-hour murmur at the gourmet sandwich shop a block from the Capitol. He shook hands, wished patrons a "good Fourth of July" and scarfed down part of a salad before diving into a scrum of television cameras.

Some diners praised Giuliani for his work as mayor after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, even if they were less acquainted with his political positions.

"I don't want them just to look at Sept. 11," Giuliani said. "I want them to look at my entire record as mayor, taking a city that was the crime capital of America and turning it into the safest large community in America."

On the Republican side, Rudy Giulliani (33%) leads in the presidential primary race, followed by John McCain (19%), Newt Gingrich (14%), and Mitt Romney (7%). Guiliani has similar support among men and women, and conservatives and others. Gingrich has more support among conservatives and men, while McCain has similar support among men and women, but less support among conservatives than others. In a national survey, Giuliani led McCain by 40 percent to 20 percent, according to the March TIME poll.

Giuliani leads McCain among Pro-Choice voters, and among Pro-Life voters, McCain runs 3rd behind Giuliani and Gingrich; Giuliani leads among both those who support and those who oppose same-sex marriage; Giuliani leads among those who are for stem-cell research and those against it; Giuliani leads among those who own guns and those who don't; Giuliani leads among those who think global warming is real and among those who think global warming is made-up; and Giuliani leads among those who think the USA needs a military draft and among those who think the USA does not. McCain, from the neighboring state of Arizona, does not get above 26% in any age group nor in any region of California.

Giuliani's Golden Ticket?

In a move to increase its relevance in the presidential selection process, the Golden State is set to jump up its primary from June of 2008 to February 5th, less than a year away.

This may benefit New York's presidential aspirants, and especially its Republican one.

Last week I noted Giuliani's electric support at the California Republican Party convention. A recent poll has resoundingly brought forth the same message. This morning, the Wall Street Journal's John Fund notes the following numbers:

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, still basking in his can-do post-Sept. 11 image, got a rousing welcome yesterday from Republican activists searching for a presidential candidate who can win in California.

No Republican presidential candidate has carried California since the elder George Bush did in 1988, and no one has even run a competitive race in the increasingly Democratic-leaning state since then.

Giuliani interests GOP state conventioneers

When Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani speak at the California Republican Convention this weekend, some party leaders from Solano County will be there and listening carefully.

Approximately 1,300 delegates from across the state are expected to fill the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Sacramento beginning today through Sunday. Among them will be Mike Gomez, the chair of the Solano County Republican Party Central Committee, and Lynda Rose McMahan, chair of Solano Republican Women's Federated.
